What is an OT?

An Occupational Therapist (OT)*, who has received additional training in home evaluation and adaptation will come into your home to provide you with a thorough assessment of your level of physical and cognitive function as well as an assessment of your home. You will then be provided with a report outlining all of the recommendations for both rehabilitation of self as well as environmental adaptation of your environment. At this point, if you would like to follow through with the recommendations, Helping Hands will guide you through the process and manage all of the associated professionals for the duration of the project. Examples of these professionals are: construction contractors specializing in accessibility, equipment specialists, interior designers, and physiotherapists. Including these professionals is not always necessary, each client presents with different needs and Helping Hands has built relationships with many professionals so that they can be requested as needed.
“An OT is a therapist who works with a client to help them achieve a fulfilled and satisfied state in life through the use of “purposeful activity or interventions designed to achieve functional outcomes which promote health, prevent injury or disability and which develop, improve, sustain or restore the highest possible level of independence” (AJOT, 1994).
